FM gave me an opportunity to showcase my speaking skillz and speak about the keys to being a young entrepreneur. We spoke about time management, and the importance of goal setting short term vs long term. We had a great time and so many folks came up to me afterwords to show love and express their renewed courage to begin their own business that has been locked away in their hearts for so long! That was the best part for me! Some of the still shots are really cool too :)

During my R&R, I went to hit some balls. But based on this photo it looks more like I was about to take off on a fast ball as opossed to hitting a hole in one :( In my defense I hadn't been on the green in years and my pink and gray clubs were as dusty as my swing.
Lesson of the day = practice practice practice. Time to put my beautiful clubs back to work on a regular basis...but this game is addictive and a real workout for the upper body! Funny tho.

Deer Valley High School Shooting

Last week during my much needed R&R, I got a call saying that there was a shooting at my niece and nephews high school in Antioch. That' a call you never want to receive but thank God that they were not injured, just shaken up to say the lease. The little boy that was shot while walking to school, is expected to make a full recovery. It just makes you wonder where are we as adults going wrong with our youth that we don't value our lives or the lives of others? Is the world really becoming more violent or is it just that we have more media coverage nowadays? What can be done?
Take care of your families and guard them with information to stay away from violence and to be courageous when getting into disagreements to use non-violence to avoid these senseless crimes that effect entire communities. And whatever happened to an old-fashioned fist fight? Those days are gone, so it's time to teach our kids not to have beefs with each other by providing them with promising bright futures.

Today me and mom got to hang out, talk, and really spend some down time not working or multi-tasking and it was really refreshing...and she cooked! It reminded me of the old days when we used to chill out on the regular just the two if us away from all other siblings and cares in the world. Quality time creates memories and unbreakable bonds, if you are so lucky to have a mom try not to neglect her time and efforts and consider yourself very blessed!

Shimmer & Shine :) My little niece - the entrepreneur!

Over this holiday weekend, one of my big sisters brought one of my nieces over to speak to me about this $1k phone bill she talked up! I can't say I was proud of the crazy bill but I was so inspired and proud of her little entrepreneur spirit. As we sat at my computer she brainstormed ideas of businesses she could create with no money out of her pocket (cause she ain't got none LOL) that she could create to pay her family back. I was so proud of her imagination and ambition to take responsibility for the pricey mistake that she made. We finally came up with Shimmer and Shine her personal hand car washing business. She could walk to her neighbors homes and wash their cars within their driveways outside of their homes. We found a need that she was able to fill for other people. Every working adult that lives in a suburb stays on the highway and is normally exhausted when they get home, but they would love to have a clean car that Shimmers and Shines. My niece will provide that for her neighbors! She is so cute! She provides the materials necessary and all appointments are after school. We then calculated out how long it would take her to pay off her phone bill washing 1 car 3times per week. Armed with an adult, and her fliers, going door to door to promote and collect appointments:) No one can resist this business! Here is the flier we created along with her appointment schedule. I handle all of the calls and book her appointments and referrals then pass addresses along to her mom for inspection. She is the deal! Now if a pre-teen can mature up and create some income during this recession then there really are no excuses for the rest of us! Go Head Girl! love you...good luck doll I am so proud of you.

Despite all of the heat that managed to sweat out my press (aka flat iron), I had the best lunch meeting with ladies from the Family Violence Prevention Fund headquarters Friday!
Their motto is "changing the world for the next generation", and they really are doing that! Over thin crust pizza and some really good grilled asparagus, The vice president and two lovely program specialists educated me about campaigns that are creating change in the way that our youth relate to one another around the nation. I was really inspired and cannot wait to collaborate and bring awareness to every venue I attend. The knowMore campaign www.KnowMoreSayMore.org is focused around the correlation of dating violence and reproductive health such as HIV and unintended pregnancy. Jeanine is awesome and really is passionate about educating young women (college age primarily) about their resources and how to end the abuse.
I also learned about the That's Not Cool Campaign. www.ThatsNotCool.com, its all about textual harassment and other controlling behaviors that are found to be on the rise among the "tween" population. The video above is a part of the campaign and as I watched I was laughing but had to admit that even I, a grown woman, have had instances where I dealt with that kind of harassment and unnecessary texting from someone I was involved with. Many times I think the guys may not even realize how overboard they are. In some of their minds they may just be checking on you or showing you attention that we all find flattering from time to time. However, this video had me realize "you know what that is never cool! If someone is texting me ever few minutes that is always overboard regardless of the intent"....See I'm still learning everyday!
Anyway, whenever you come to see me speak or write articles I am going to be representing for the ladies and the tremendous amount that goes into these campaigns and bringing them to the "ground-work" (the people).

Aaliyah R.I.P. More Than A Woman

I used to believe she was gone too soon. But now I know that everything is on God's timing... A beautiful woman, beautiful spirit, incredible talent, and an even bigger imprint left on the world. I was fortunate enough to meet her and remember the genuine sweetness I felt when she was around. We miss you and will continue to be inspired by your self-esteem and courage to work to achieve your dreams. 8 years flew by...she serves as a reminder for me not to waist a minute... Give Respect!, Start Strong and PopSugar

Give Respect! is the next step for me when it comes to building on my speaking platform against Teen Dating Domestic Violence. If you haven't heard of this organization and all of the work that they are doing to save our youth from unhealthy relationships, get with it! The more I speak with the organization and research the campaigns, I learn more and more disturbing facts. Did you know that over 40% of tweens (girls in middle school) are experiencing some form of domestic violence in their dating lives. I didn't even comprehend these babies even having dating lives to begin with let alone that they are dealing with abuse. Dating violence is not always physical, and I love how Give Respect! points out all of the many faces of domestic violence including mental and verbal. Physical violence is not always hitting and pushing and shoving it can also be sexual violence. I learned that in teen dating there are a ton of instances being reported where girls say that they were not "raped" but they were in the heat of the moment faced with the boy not wanting to put on a condom or slipping it off as a means to control the girl and keep her with him...i.e. get her pregnant. This is domestic violence. It's so important for young women to know that this is wrong and the most effective way of challenging their limiting beliefs has been proven to be through education on the issues.
I also learned about the Sugar Network a while back and recently became an active member of this community. Look me up, MiracleGirl, and say hello. It is yet another positive association that I can point to and recommend to young ladies along my journey (after Freedom Movement of course...)LOL.

North Richmond Young Adult Enrichment Center

Through Freedom Movement we get to do a great deal of community outreach with youth in urban areas. This week we visited the NRYAEC and Max taught them about What To Do With $1. What we learned is that with anything, Once is not enough in order to impact and influence real change in other peoples lives. I am able to work with the young women here in a 10 week series on self esteem beginning in September. Max will be doing mentorship with the youth age 13-24 in the area of personal finance and goal setting. We are excited but more than anything urge the community and all FM members to rally next to us to serve the young people in this community to show them several tangible examples of adults who have made it out and have achieved success in their lives. It's hands on and a whole different world in North Richmond but if nothing else we learned that we have a heart for this work and we both really believe in these young people. It's all a mindset thing. Overtime with consistent interest and love shown to them they will be able to create long lasting change...

Hilltop Community Church Youth Group

Hilltop Community Church youth group under Pastor Corey, the youth pastor, brought some young people from Australia out to perform and speak to the young people. I was truly moved and inspired to hear the message they had for us. The message was love! Love yourself and your creator. It was deep! And right up my alley.

I was also stunned to hear from Pastor Debbie that she and the Pastor (her husband) have both read my book No One is Coming to the Rescue, while on their anniversary vacation! If that were not enough to make me blush and grin from ear to ear, then I had the chance to speak with a young female leader (I am a huge fan of her poetry, its DOPE!) who told me she had finished my book and was transformed, how on-time the message was for her life, and how she has 3x5 cards with vocab and growth spurts from the books lessons that she can refer to. I was blown away...I love this church! Come through if you ever find yourself in Hilltop Area, Richmond CA. I'll be there any time I am in town!

We got the opportunity to shoot promo videos on location all day and the best part was the interviews with New Authors on the Verge of big thangs. This was my first interview on camera for the book and the first time I had to use Que cards for the promo welcome video. It was a trip to say the least! but we made it happen...Freedom Movement got a face lift so we are juiced to post our new videos on the site! I will post the videos once they come back from editing. The lesson of the day was never work for 11 hours with no food in 100 degree weather or you will get sick. I mean SICK as a dog...But today I learned how important it is to keep working through your pain and since my work is my passion it gave me that extra push to keep smiling despite the bumpin headache and annoying stomach twisting nausea. LOL... Check out the location shots! There was a river with real ducks in it, an infinity pool with waterfalls and palm trees and the works and we were blessed to be able to run a muck and get filmed all over the estate! New Workbooks Published! For Facilitators and Participants!!!

God has been great! Through all of the different organizations and speaking opportunities that have presented themselves, now we have a No One is Coming to the Rescue Workbook and No One is Coming to the Rescue facilitator guidebook that has been approved for publishing by Freedom Publishing House. All of the participants that complete our workshops will now have more than a journal to keep with them! Now it is available for everyone to complete their own Rescue program with or without me which allows the workshops to expand much further than 1 woman would ever be able to reach and that's exciting. The Facilitator guide for the leader of the workshops to direct all of our exercises with their woman's organization to continue the work while we are no longer at their facilities. In business the more mobilization you have to reach the masses the greater the impact can be. Stay tuned for the My Rescue Journal, a companion as you read the book which has been approved to go to print early next week God willing.

Center for Young Womens Development

I was recently able to be educated on and meet with the program coordinator of a one of a kind organization! I was blown away by the work that they are doing within the community and the real change that has taken place in young lives because of their heartfelt dedication to building skills and self-love in women over the past 15 years. As stated on their website, the Center for Young Womens Development, their programs encourage young women to move beyond survival and become leaders and advocates for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated young women. Although young women and girls represent almost 30% of the total juvenile arrests, they have access to a fraction of the prevention and alternative to incarceration programs available to boys. Nationwide, they receive only 2% of services. Because of the lack of alternative programs, jobs, and housing, young women and girls find themselves locked up or on probation longer for lesser crimes than their male counterparts.... Currently their are no other programs serving this same demographic and I will be honored to be associated with them in the future! Check them out!

Family Violence Prevention Fund Rocks!

Family Violence Prevention Fund organization is doing some remarkable work. Thanks to the warm reception from headquarters in Boston, I am now a advocate for these campaigns and will be raising awareness with their help at each event on my platform for Teen Domestic Dating Violence. Check them out.

That’s Not Cool is a national public service advertising (PSA) campaign designed to helps teens recognize digital dating abuse and take steps to prevent it. Developed by the Family Violence Prevention Fund, in partnership with the Department of Justice’s Office of Violence Against Women and the Advertising Council, That’s Not Cool uses digital examples of controlling behavior online and by cell phone to encourage teens to draw their own line about what is, or is not, acceptable relationship behavior.

Sexual violence, sexual coercion and dating violence are significant issues for young people though frequently unrecognized and even more often, untreated. The ramifications of sexual violence last well beyond the incident itself. Sexual violence is related to a wide range of negative health outcomes including greater incidence and exposure to HIV and other STDs, unhealthy weight, asthma, diabetes, substance abuse, risky sexual behaviors, miscarriage and unplanned pregnancy.

The Family Violence Prevention Fund, through a national project, is taking on the issue of sexual violence and its reproductive health implications. Through a national initiative, kNOw MORE, the FVPF is working to educate youth about the reproductive health consequences of violence and sexual coercion. Through a national public awareness campaign, we invite youth to say ‘no more’ to reproductive coercion; know more about how to stop it; and say more to anyone and everyone who will listen.

Dove Self Esteem Fund Training for girls in Urban Areas

Today I found out that I will be facilitating a Self-Esteem Workshop for middle school girls within the inner city sponsored by the Dove self-esteem fund. I couldn't be more grateful to all of those who are helping to make this happen for the girls in our community who have often been ignored and forgotten. These young ladies are our future leaders and taking the time to listen and speak with them away from all of their normal family dramas, violence, drugs, gang shootings, and other negative influences will allow them to see that not only do others care for them but that they have options. I am very honored to serve because there has never been a workshop tour date within an urban community.

Last year, in San Francisco a survey was taken and found that 25% of girls surveyed said they believed they were not good enough daughters. 71% said they didn't believe that they measured up to others in some way, and 51% of these young women said they normally engaged in destructive behavior such as cutting, smoking and drinking when they feel bad about themselves or neglected by a loved one. The top wish girls had was for parents to communicate better with them... These findings are typical, most teens just need some attention, a hug, some love and to feel that they are worthy enough to have a voice that is heard. The city of Richmond may provide us with much more disturbing findings but this is definitely a step in the right direction and promises to be an event that the girls will never forget...

Hilltop Community Church

This weekend I was blessed to be able to attend Hilltop Community Church in Richmond, CA. The service was a dual gift from The Pastor and his wife and it included a performance by the cutest children ever! So, you know I was happy! They offer a dynamic Woman's Ministry that, God willing, will be reading No One is Coming to the Rescue soon! What I thought was fascinating was the fact that here was this beautiful remodeled facility full of talented gifted speakers/teachers that I'm sure most of the community has never even stepped foot into to experience. There is so much crime in Richmond, we know this because it is highlighted on the news daily, but here is this immaculate place doing exceptional work for the community and no one hears about it. That will change soon starting with me... More people of this community deserve to be a part of this church.

Aside from my declaration of change, check this out, one example of their forward thinking in action: the church provided buses that night and they took all of the youth to a christian rap concert featuring one of the most popular artists named Lecrae. He is the leader of the genre because unlike other artists his sound, lyrics, and beats sound like other popular artists such as 50 cent. As a result Lecrae's music has stayed in the number1 spot for longer than any other rapper in his genre. The kids were juiced and all the parents had to do is get them to the bus and pick them back up later that night. These are the type of activities that need to be publicized heavily in the media! The church is making it a priority to relate to the youth by setting up late night entertainment while still providing and protecting them. Great job...check out this video link.

Oakland Post Newspaper Article

Being from Oakland it is often so easy to neglect the positive historical accomplishments that the city has achieved. It wasn't until recently that I researched the The Oakland Post Newspaper and found that not only was it founded in 1963 by Thomas Berkley and Velda Berkley, but it is the largest African-American weekly newspaper in northern California. Headquartered in downtown, the weekly paper serves the San Francisco Bay Area communities of Oakland, Richmond, Berkeley and across the bridge to San Fancisco. It is one of five local newspapers published by the Post News Group, along with The Berkeley Tri City Post and The Richmond Post.

Sadly, the paper made headlines in the news when its newly promoted editor in chief to all five publications, prominent African-American journalist Chauncey Bailey, was killed by a gunman at close range one morning in August 2007, while on his way to work.

Through the tragedy, the paper continues to publish news and advertising with a combined circulation of 55,000 as reported in 2008. This paper has a firm place within the history of the city of Oakland and I am proud to be able to be included in that. Take a minute to research and appreciate the history of your city.

Ive been blessed to do work with women and teens around America, centered around my book. As a result, I'll be hosting revamped online radio show on WGHG. Its the official Ladies Inspiration Station... basically a 30 minute interview show for females ages 13-85! (wait that's like everybody right...)

"GO HEAD GIRL!" radio, WGHG, is the ladies inspiration station where we interview different women of various ages and backgrounds who have inspired change in their lives, communities, families, etc. We will also spotlight women who have overcome odds, women on the rise in their careers and the hard hitting issues that we face as we evolve. Phone Interview "Up and Coming Authors Review"

Just wrapped a phone interview/book review for "Up and Coming Female Authors", and though I couldn't be more thrilled about the story on my book, I had to blog on what came up. Somehow this essay I wrote back in 1989 resurfaced! I won a contest when I was 8 in which I wrote a story about my fascination with the incredible actress/singer Lena Horne. She played Glenda the Good Witch in "The Wiz" and I guess I just wished she would sing "Believe" to me! LOL. I used to sing Lena's part to these stuffed animals. How hilarious is that!

Touring Chicago and South Barrington...

While touring one stop has been to Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington Illinois. It was AMAZING...to say the least! I have never seen so many people come to hear a speaker, not to mention there is a water fall INSIDE the building! Being from Oakland this was a building out of my wildest dreams. There was a series being taught on Influence and the pastor highlighted Mother Teresa for an entire week. I was so taken back by the woman that she was, and her unshakable faith in service to others. The music was LIVE like a concert! And the theater is the largest in America West of the Mississippi river! It currently holds a consistent congregation of 20,000 people. There is so much I can say but I guess the most impactful aspect was that even though the building was so massive, I always felt the love and community sometimes more so than Ive felt inside a small house. It was deep. I mean it even had a waterfall inside and a few escalators, inside of the church building! I don't know about y'all but we don't have nothing like this in the Bay Area, but I kept thinking that if kids from Oakland could see the possibilities I believe it would be a step in the right direction for our community. We had a few days off for some sightseeing and my favorite was the shopping in downtown Chi-Town and the Sears Tower! Despite all of the crowded airplanes, hotels, long working nights, and going from event to event, It was a beautiful experience with many eye opening memories. If you get a chance experience it for yourself! You will be forever changed...

Gianni at BET Awards

Growing up, I can remember my girl Gigi breaking out into song whenever she felt the urge for any and everyone who would listen! Even though sometimes we weren't in the mood to hear her harmonies and riffs, it was her craft and she was gonna sang her song. lol. She has undeniable talent, a beautiful voice and a whole lot of tenacity...and its paying off! She does a great deal of songwriting for artists and has her little petite foot well within the industry. Here she is with friends at the BET Awards last week. You probably recognize them, they are members of Diddy's Making of the Band Day 26.... look out for her all female band performing all around Los Angeles! Congrats Gigi, sky really is the limit for you. So proud of you!

Precious Moments contd...

Whew! While I was writing this book, let's just say the creative process is not always a pretty one. lol. It definitely got grimey while I was laying out my thoughts via paper, pen, and computer. Man it was rough more times than not, head barely hit the pillow for a few months there especially when deadlines grew closer. It was funny, after a while I think I had set up shop on every possible surface and found the floor to be the most comfortable cause late night I could spread all my materials around...bible, laptop, reference books, highlighters, television with Nick at Nite on heavy rotation, pens, headphones, scratch paper, emotions, notes, my BIG ole concordance, quotes, blankets, sour jelly bellies etc. lol A chaotic scene. It seemed like it was never gonna be complete. But whats even funnier is quitting never came up. I just couldnt wait to get back to my sense of "normalcy". The life of a writer is a lonely one and I really wasnt ready for all of that. But those were moments I can treasure forever, heck I was writing my first book, and I would never trade...what a trip :)

More Precious Moments....

Ok. So, this was the day that only a fellow author could truly understand. But when I received my U.S. Copyright and ISBN Bar Code from Bowker it was the most amazing sense of accomplishment. I felt like I had been a soldier at battle on the field for years and finally here was my badge of honor that I made it out of there. WOW! I cried, I jumped, I skipped through the office. It was hillarious! I had to print it out and blow it up and.....frame it on my wall where it hangs! hee hee If you dont know, this little bar code symbolizes that even when I am gone from this earth physically, my work and words will always live on. And in the United States Library of Congress I will always be there. Its so official. Get one for yourself if you don't feel me. Most def a precious life moment...

A few years ago I was blessed to help build a business of nearly one thousand people strong. It was a magical time on many levels not only because my leadership skills grew by leaps and bounds, nor solely due to a serious increase in my income, but mostly because a group of key women emerged as leaders and as years went on as friends. What I learned is that business can come and go, money can come and go, but real friends that care about you don't go anywhere... here is an old school pic of these women of all ages and its amazing how all of them are still connected and in contact with me and to me to this day! This was the beginning, thank you I will always treasure these growing years ladies!

Another Precious Life Moment...

Many moons ago, a talented gentleman I heart very much surprised me with one of the most incredible forms of flattery I have ever received. It turned out for several previous months he was having a famous painter reproduce a self-portrait of me from a photograph. I was shocked that someone would do something so time consuming, not to mention expensive, for lil ole me. It was a princess moment and I will always appreciate the thought and effort that went into that. Whenever someone does something for you of that magnitude they deserve recognition whether they want it or not. :) Now I'm sure you can see why this has made my list for one of the precious moments of my life thus far. Sunday, I was able to be a part of an event held at Beth Eden Baptist Church in Oakland CA. put on by Freedom Movement. A fellow author, Maximillion Williams spoke about his book called "What To Do With $1: Kingdom Economics are More Than Tithes and Offerings". Not only was it off the chain speaking but the warm reception from all of the people in attendance was probably the most fulfilling! I am heavily involved with everything that this company does because I believe in what they stand for, not to mention they published my book, LOL.

My new book is touching the lives of a whole lot of people these days. Women and men all ages, all backgrounds, all religions and upbringings. It is a blessing! A few days ago while at a book signing I was flagged down by a woman who said that after reading a few pages that morning she had "a revelation about whats been holding her back her entire life". Shocked yet humbled as we finished the conversation and I walked away it was hard to believe she was talking about something that I had written! But she was. I keep telling myself that it's these little moments that I'm going to remember most. Which is what lead me to finally start blogging. Everyone keeps asking me "where's your blog, where's your blog? blog blog blog?" Well here it is. And it will be good too. From book signing to events near and far, everyday I get to meet some of the most interesting, precocious, outspoken, folks on the planet. I mean I couldn't make this stuff up if I tried! And I'm a writer. So here we go...
